I’m quite sure we’ve all been pondering, to some degree, the need for the expression of good character to be demonstrated in our communities and throughout the world. Throughout history, there is plenty of documentation of those individuals who have sacrificed for the “good of the cause.” Today, there are many causes that need our attention and it all begins with the expression of good character, in some instances placing others’ needs before our own, and practicing the Golden Rule – to treat others the way we want to be treated.
Julie Dawson, Japhet friend and noted local artist and gardener, shared the following words with me:
These words were written by John Wesley and shared recently by the incoming President of DePauw University, Lori S. Smith, with the DePauw University Alumni Association.
I’m grateful for each member of the Japhet Community, who recognizes the value of our commitment to teaching and modeling good character. At Japhet School, we believe good character is essential to guiding our students to be their very best and to help them make a difference in their respective communities. Thank you for being a part of the team!
“Good character is more to be praised than outstanding talent. Most talents are, to some extent, a gift. Good character, by contrast, is not given to us. We have to build it piece by piece ~ by thought, choice, courage, and determination.”
John Luther
