Special Subjects

Integration is key in our special subject classes. When Middle School students study the American Revolution, they’re also cooking out of Martha Washington’s historical cookbook in Life Skills class. When Lower Elementary students study the Brazilian rainforest, they create beautiful tropical birds in Art. All students attend special subjects, enriching their education with instruction in world language, fine and performing art, and technology activities that are directly integrated with current studies in their homerooms.

Library

PreschoolEighth
Literature is all around us at Japhet. In Library class students learn how to choose books, practice location skills, and enjoy read-aloud time. All students may check out books weekly. Japhet has an all-school DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time every week. The goal: to instill a lifelong love of reading.

Spanish

Preschool-Eighth
Skits, conversations, and artistic activities bring the Spanish language to life! Learning a second language is fun and interactive at Japhet, where students practice conversation, learn vocabulary, and explore Central American culture with creative and practical activities. Middle School students also have traditional assessments, preparing them for high school.

Music

Preschool-Eighth
Music class involves vocal performance, playing percussion and Orff instruments, reading music, listening, moving, playing games, and composing — all of which encourage expression through the arts. Japhet’s Music classes also prepare students for our all-school musical performances in December and May.

Physical Education

First-Eighth
Japhet’s P.E. classes begin with calisthenics and a group huddle with character discussion at the center. Individual strengthening and a positive experience with team games like basketball, soccer, volleyball, and floor hockey build lifelong competitors who seek physical activity.

Life Skills

Kindergarten-Eighth
Life Skills at Japhet is a cooking class with an emphasis on time management, following directions, cooperative learning, and problem solving. Life Skills class, heavily integrated with students’ core studies, provides an opportunity to merge history, food, and character education … deliciously.

Art

Kindergarten-Eighth
With classical music as a backdrop, students explore a variety of media and techniques as they learn the basic principles of design. Skill-building occurs as the concepts of line, shape, form, color, value, texture and space are woven together. It is our objective for students to recognize and use art as a unique and valuable means of communicating.

Integrated Technology

First-Eighth
Tech class engages students in making choices as they locate, generate, and manipulate information. Using wireless Chromebooks with online applications, as well as interactive tools from their core studies, students begin an assignment in their homeroom and develop it more deeply in Technology class. Lessons in online ethics and digital citizenship bring character into the technology realm.
